Braces & Brushing Your Teeth

January 27, 2011

How should children with braces clean their teeth?

Always floss first using floss threaders/floss and go in between each tooth.

The use of a Waterpik is great to remove food debris and plaque, however does not substitute flossing.

I (Hygienist Yee Fong) always tell my ortho patients to concentrate brushing their teeth and gums (45 degree angle toward the gum line), and then go back and concentrate on brushing their brackets and wires (brush at least 3-4min each time 3-4x/day).

The use of a fluoride rinse 2x/day morning/night (ACT rinse) after brushing is great to prevent decay and demineralization as well! Oral hygeiene can be very challenging during ortho treatment, however the more you practice, the faster and more familiar you will become with it and the better you will get at it!
