Meet Dr. Patricia Bloss, Instructor with Assist To Succeed Dental Assisting School, Colorado Springs

July 26, 2012

Patricia Bloss, D.D.S.

Why are you taking the time to teach at the Assist to Succeed Dental Assisting School?

I have practiced dentistry for over 30 years. Many assisting schools do not offer enough hands-on experience . Understanding why an assistant does something is important but doing it is vital. This school will provide students with more hands on experience than most schools.

What makes Assist To Succeed a valuable program?

It is a comprehensive program that builds upon the basics. Students will feel comfortable entering a dental office with the skills they acquire. There is oral, video, and hands-on instruction.

What skills do you bring to the curriculum?  What do you hope to pass along to your students?

I have a comprehensive knowledge of the material that will be presented. I have done every job in the dental office from assisting to being the dentist my own active practice for twenty years. I will pass along the skills which dentists are looking for.

Why is Dental Assisting a good career choice?

The advantage of a career in dental assisting is helping people and doing something different every day. It is a hands-on career and the assistant is in control of procedures going smoothly.

Who should apply for this school?

Students from all walks of life are good candidates . Someone who likes hand-on work and who like people are good candidates. It is a very reasonably priced program and will provide skills for a life-long career.

What does the job prospect look like for Dental Assistants?

Even when the economy takes a down turn, people still need dental care. Typically, there is a shortage of good, personable and reliable dental assistants.

Can you please share some examples of “A typical day in the life of a Dental Assistant”?

A typical day involves the morning huddle discussing the patients of the day. Then setting up rooms for procedures. Often in a day there will be patients in for fillings, crown, dentures, root canal, and extractions. The assistant seats the patient and updates the medical history.  The assistant makes sure the patient is comfortable and spends time getting to know the patient, putting them at ease. During the procedure, the assistant keeps the field clear with suction so the dentist can see. The assistant takes all x-rays as needed and simple impressions. The assistant does much of the charting and record making.  At the end of the procedure, the assistant dismisses the patient and then takes the used tools to the sterilization area. After placing instruments in the ultrasonic, the assistant sets up another room. They are responsible for ordering supplies. This is just an example of a typical day.

What skills do you bring to the curriculum?  What do you hope to pass along to your students?

16 years of experience including: General Dentistry, Orthodontics, Radiology, TMJ, Periodontics and Patient care. I hope to pass along as much knowledge as I can and teach students the importance of building relationships with patients.

Why is Dental Assisting a good career choice?

It’s a good career choice because it is exciting! Every day is different. Technology is constantly changing so you never get bored. There is always something new to learn.
