Attention Teens! Orthodontic treatment is an important investment in your future. Everyone helping with your orthodontic care wants you to have the best results possible.
While you are wearing braces, it is essential that you take care of your teeth and gums.
The hygienist at Aesthetic Dentistry by Design has seen many teen patients lately who haven’t been taking good care of their teeth while wearing braces.
She shares some tips on the whys and how of protecting your smile while wearing braces.
Greater Risk of Tooth Decay
The brackets and wires on braces have many nooks and crannies that can trap food and plaque. This means your risk of tooth decay and gum problems may be higher while you are wearing braces.
Permanent damage to tooth enamel (such as white chalk marks due to decalcification) can occur if the teeth and brackets are not kept clean.
How To Keep Your Teeth Clean
1. Remove the plaque – Use an electric tooth brush like Sonicare and brush for the recommended, full 2 minutes.
2. Use a Waterpik – A Waterpik Water Flosser with the Orthodontic Tip is designed with a tapered brush on the end to help remove plaque that sticks to the brackets and between your teeth. It also helps flush out the bacteria and food debris from around teeth and under the gums.
3. Use a Platypus Flosser – Features a Spatula end to fit under the arch wire and a Bracket Pick for around brackets. Free samples are available at Aesthetic Dentistry by Design.
While you are having orthodontic treatment, you need to continue to have regular check-ups with Aesthetic Dentistry by Design to ensure little problems don’t become big ones. 719-599-0700

StyleBistro.com featured the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Electric Toothbrush in their “Current Obsession” column.
From the column:
Our current obsession is none other than a tool to care for our most important beauty asset: our smile. Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Electric Toothbrush is a handy rechargeable toothbrush that has changed the way this editor cares for her teeth. No exaggeration.
DiamondClean is the tool I’m turning to to make my pearly whites bright as snow this winter. The built-in timer ensures I actually brush for a full two minutes. (No cheating!) Its vibrating head is powerful without being painful or annoyingly loud, which are the two main reasons I’ve bailed on every other electric toothbrush in the past. I can actually feel it massaging my gums and cleaning my teeth. A clinical study even found that the DiamondClean removes up to 7x more plaque than a manual toothbrush after four weeks of use.

In honor of National Dental Hygiene Month, we asked our hygienist, What is your favorite Sonicare product? Tell us about the Sonicare products available at Aesthetic Dentistry by Design.
Christine: I have used Sonicare brushes for many years. Since I floss regularly I do not use the Airfloss but I believe it can be helpful for people who do not like their fingers in their mouth.
Aesthetic Dentistry by Design has the Diamond Clean and Flex care models of Sonicare toothbrush as well as the Airfloss. We also carry replacement heads which you should replace about every 3 months.

According to this a bright, white smile!
“The tooth-polishing powertool cranks out 31,000 brushstrokes per minute, which would take you a month to rack up with a manual brush. The DiamondClean is touted to remove five times more plaque than a manual brush, whiten teeth in one week, and improve gum health in two weeks. It also features a two-minute timer and a USB cord so you can charge it up at your computer.”

According to Arthritis Today, one of the best weapons against the swollen, painful joints that characterize rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may just be the dentist’s chair.
Researchers at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, split 40 people with severe RA into two groups: One was given a “deep” nonsurgical dental cleaning, in which bacteria are scraped from the root surface and from under the gum line and tartar is removed from the teeth. The other group got instructions from a dentist about how to keep their teeth clean at home.
Within six weeks, the group that had the professional cleaning had significantly less pain and morning stiffness and fewer swollen and painful joints than the group that cleaned their teeth at home. Even more impressive, researchers found that the deep cleaning actually decreased levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, an inflammatory protein in the blood that triggers inflammation.
Regular visits to a periodontist , such as Dr. James Orban at Aesthetic Dentistry by Design, can provide advanced periodontal treatment can help keep periodontal disease under control, and perhaps minimize some of the symptoms of arthritis as well.
Additionally, arthritis patients who have difficulty taking care of their oral health, power toothbrushes and an AirFloss have proven to be extremely helpful for arthritis sufferers with limited manual dexterity.
