Attention Teens! Orthodontic treatment is an important investment in your future. Everyone helping with your orthodontic care wants you to have the best results possible.
While you are wearing braces, it is essential that you take care of your teeth and gums.
The hygienist at Aesthetic Dentistry by Design has seen many teen patients lately who haven’t been taking good care of their teeth while wearing braces.
She shares some tips on the whys and how of protecting your smile while wearing braces.
Greater Risk of Tooth Decay
The brackets and wires on braces have many nooks and crannies that can trap food and plaque. This means your risk of tooth decay and gum problems may be higher while you are wearing braces.
Permanent damage to tooth enamel (such as white chalk marks due to decalcification) can occur if the teeth and brackets are not kept clean.
How To Keep Your Teeth Clean
1. Remove the plaque – Use an electric tooth brush like Sonicare and brush for the recommended, full 2 minutes.
2. Use a Waterpik – A Waterpik Water Flosser with the Orthodontic Tip is designed with a tapered brush on the end to help remove plaque that sticks to the brackets and between your teeth. It also helps flush out the bacteria and food debris from around teeth and under the gums.
3. Use a Platypus Flosser – Features a Spatula end to fit under the arch wire and a Bracket Pick for around brackets. Free samples are available at Aesthetic Dentistry by Design.
While you are having orthodontic treatment, you need to continue to have regular check-ups with Aesthetic Dentistry by Design to ensure little problems don’t become big ones. 719-599-0700
