Dr. Ken Gasper, Dentist
Owner, Aesthetic Dentistry by Design, Colorado Springs, CO
Best part of your current job:
We are truly blessed with patients who enjoy and desire the level of care we want for them.
The explosion of technological advances in dentistry over the last 10 years has created many new and exciting opportunities by which we can enhance the lives of our family of patients.
I work with an exceptional staff, intelligent, well trained, and who enjoy providing the level of care that our patients have come to expect of us.
Worst part of your current job:
I actually enjoy the daily challenges inherent in providing dental care to our patients. I suppose the biggest challenge is keeping abreast of the cutting edge changes occurring in dentistry today. One has to be in a constant, teachable mode and eager to learn.
I first knew I wanted to get into the dental field when…
I recognized the artistry inherent in the profession. The creative nature of dentistry held great appeal for me.
Dentistry requires a creative/artistic talent. How are you creative/artistic in other areas of your life?
An actor over the years, performing on stage, I find less time for this area these days.
Lecturing in Dentistry has taken the place of acting. Creating presentations that are engaging, educational and hold the attention of the audience. The art of creating a great learning experience that challenges my students to inspire and not overwhelm. This is creative and includes components of stagecraft. In reality, I find myself on stage daily at the office, interacting, entertaining, educating, and being educated.
How do you stay innovative and up-to-date in your industry?
Continual learning. Reading, studying attending lectures and conferences. The internet has provided educational opportunities like no other time in history.
Where did you grow up?
Where did you attend college/dental school?
LSU Undergraduate Biology Degree 1969-1974
Xavier University Pharmacy Degree 1974-1977
LSU School of Dentistry 1978-1982
States you have lived in?
New Orleans, Colorado
What’s one of the most important things you learned in dental school?
Pursue knowledge, and pray for wisdom.
What advice do you have for patients who have dental phobias? What services do you provide to help patients relax?
Oral sedation is a way for people with dental phobias to reduce anxiety and fear while having the necessary and elective dentistry that they need or desire. We offer IV sedation to our patients who desire a deeper stage of relaxation. Nitrous oxide is available as the mildest form of relaxation available for adults and also for children. These selections fulfill the needs of our adult and children and are an important part of our practice.
At what age do you recommend children first visit the dentist?
We like to have the 1st visit for our children at 2 ½ -3 years of age.
A great introduction for the child, it is typically a wellness visit that we offer hygiene service. It is an introduction of the child to the Doctors and staff under the best of circumstances and sets the foundation for a long term positive relationship for the child. We love our kids and want them to enjoy their visits. It seems to work. Moms constantly share with us that their children are asking “when is my next dentist appointment? When can we go back to the dental office?”
We also provide movies for the kids in the children’s’ viewing room
While mom or dad is having their own work done. Oh.. and those delicious cookies.
What was your first job?
Selling electronics at a large locally owned big appliance and electronics store
What was your worst job?
I never had a worst job. I always approached my jobs with the same dedication that I have for dentistry. My early jobs were always about serving others, whether cutting the neighbors grass, selling electronics, filling prescriptions and counseling customers in the pharmacy, or delivering excellence in dental care.
It is truly about helping others.
Proudest moment, professionally?
The day I graduated from Dental school
Proudest moment, personally?
What playing on your iPod right now?
What is your favorite vacation spot?
Sun and sand
What do you want to say to your future patients?
Do not wait too far in the future to become a patient. The experience in our office is like no other dental experience. We will change forever your perception of dentistry.
