When it comes to straightening teeth, patients have more choices than ever before, but the majority of patients still end up needing to make a choice between straightening smiles using the traditional bracket and wire braces or an alignment tray systems like Invisalign orthodontics. If you’re trying to make this decision, keep reading this post. We’ll discuss the difference between these two options to help you make an informed decision about which orthodontic treatment option is right for you.
The Treatment Method
The main difference between traditional braces and Invisalign is the method they use to move teeth into place. Braces use brackets affixed to the fronts of teeth connected by wires to move teeth. The wires are adjusted periodically to place pressure on the brackets, shifting teeth into alignment. Invisalign uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to complete the same process. Each set of alignment trays represents the smile one step closer to the desired end result. Patients simply wear the aligners for two weeks at a time. Then, exchange the alignment trays for the next set in the series.
Comfort & Convenience
Traditional braces are better suited for advanced bite alignment treatments. However, they require patients to visit the dental office frequently for adjustments. They may also irritate the soft tissue, leading to sores and discomfort. Invisalign orthodontics can be used at home with fewer, shorter dental checkup appointments throughout the course of treatment. Because the alignment trays are smooth plastic, Invisalign treatment can be much more comfortable, especially for patients who have metal allergies or sensitivities. When using traditional braces, you’ll need to make some changes to your diet and oral hygiene routines, but Invisalign allows you to eat all your favorite foods and brush and floss as usual.
Cost & Affordability
With changes in the methods and materials used for bracket and wire braces and Invisalign orthodontics in recent years, both forms of orthodontic treatment are now much more affordable. In fact, Invisalign is now about the same price as traditional orthodontics. Additionally, dental insurance now covers both Invisalign and traditional braces in most cases.
