Finding and fixing cavities is one of the most important things our team does every day. Even a small spot of decay can threaten the structural integrity of an entire tooth, so finding and treating problem areas early is essential to helping a patient preserve their natural smile for as long as possible.
In the past, the only way we could actually search for cavities involved subjecting patients to uncomfortable poking and probing sessions. While this approach is largely effective, it often misses cavities that are hidden along fissure lines or inside the biting surfaces of the teeth.
To help make this process more comfortable and effective, we now use DIAGNOdent, a laser-assisted cavity detection system that helps us find and treat decay with unmatched accuracy.
DIAGNOdent actually uses a laser to examine the teeth. Depending on how the light reflects off of the enamel, this helps the device determine whether or not it is healthy or starting to experience decay. Because we’re not using a physical probe to look for cavities, DIAGNOdent is able to find much smaller areas of decay than a regular exam, especially in those hard to reach spots we touched on above. It creates a readout our team can use to identify which teeth and where on them might be in danger.
With this information, we can apply treatments to strengthen the enamel and even reverse the decay process. As a result, we’re often able to help a patient avoid developing cavities so they won’t need more extensive and expensive treatments in the future, saving them untold time and money. The entire DIAGNOdent process is quick, painless, reliable, and it helps us find and stop problems before they even occur.
